PIERCING AFTERCARE

The healing of your piercing is going to depend almost entirely on how you take care of it. Each Perfect Image location provides an aftercare package that contains everything you need for a successful healing with products that we know work.

Cetaphil® Gentle Skin Cleanser

This is a mild, unscented soap that is gentle enough to clean your new piercing without drying out the skin. While showering, use a pea size amount of Cetaphil on your finger, gently massage around your new piercing for 30 seconds and then rinse thoroughly. This should be done once a day. Buy it here.

NeilMed® Fine Mist Wound Wash

The fine mist application allows users to spray saline solution directly onto their piercing rather than having to soak their piercing in a saline bath or use a cotton ball to apply the saline solution. This creates a more sterile application process and offers a cleaning solution that makes it easy to clean surface piercings like cartilage piercings. To dispense, aim nozzle at the affected area and spray from a distance of 2-4 inches. Cover with clear cap after each use. This should be done once a day. Buy it here.

H2Ocean® Healing Rinse Sea Salt Mouth Wash

H2Ocean’s oral rinse was designed to help heal and protect new oral piercings without using harmful chemical solutions. Their alcohol-free and fluoride-free oral rinses are the only sea salt based oral rinse with enzymes naturally found in your saliva. H2Ocean’s oral rinse formulas are enriched with the ingredient xylitol which helps prevent dry mouth. It also helps to prevent strep from grouping and plaque from staining teeth. Xylitol is a natural sweetener found in fruits and vegetables and is also produced naturally by the human body in small amounts. This mouthwash should be used after you eat anything, smoke anything, or drink anything other than water for the first several weeks after your new oral piercing.

In addition to using the right products to clean your piercing, there are things you should also avoid. Your body is already trying to heal around a foreign object, it’s important that you take necessary precautions to make that easier.

Don’t Touch!
It’s absolutely vital that you do not pick at or play with your piercing while it is healing. You should only touch your piercing when you are cleaning it and you should have clean hands washed with an anti-bacterial soap before you clean your piercing.

Swimming pools, lakes and hot tubs.
Avoid swimming while your piercing is healing. Chlorine pools, chlorine hot tubs, salt water pools, and salt water hot tubs will dry out your piercing and prolong healing. Lakes and oceans contain bacteria that can cause infection.

Trauma
Try and keep your new piercing safe from getting hit, bumped, smacked or squished. Even the smallest trauma can prolong healing or cause it to reject. Sports, working out, heavy kissing, sleeping on your piercing, are all things that can prolong healing or cause your new piercing to reject and should be avoided while your piercing is healing.

Oral Care
While your oral piercing is healing it is important that you avoid fresh baked bread, red wine and beer; all which contain yeast that can cause thrush, a type of yeast infection. It is also important that you avoid hard kissing and oral sex. This can cause trauma to your piercing that will prolong healing.
