How Tattoo Artists Turn Your Ideas into Masterpieces

If you were to say a tattoo artist wasn’t a real artist, you’d get more than a few choice looks. While tattooing may not be a “traditional” form of art, it doesn’t take away from the fact that taking a sketch to skin is a feat most people can’t even conceptualize.

In fact, many of us don’t truly understand the process of developing the idea of a tattoo, let alone what it takes to make it a permanent fixture on someone’s body. Today, we’re going to explore what it takes to bring sketch to skin with the help of the pros from Perfect Image – tattoo artists of the highest caliber.

Perfect Image takes art quite seriously across our locations, from Kitchener-Waterloo to Brantford, London, Barrie, and Banff. But just as art expands over many genres, so do the artists' processes that take concepts to permanent forms of body art.

Let’s explore how a tattoo artist takes an idea and turns it into a masterpiece:

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

When it comes to sketching tattoos, it's easy to assume the process is only a few simple steps when you're watching a professional scratch away at a slip of paper.

However, what is happening is that an artist is developing a piece of work based on self-expression combined with someone else's vision; based on an art form that has been practiced worldwide since the Neolithic times, from the time of mummies and memories lost.

The ancient art of tattooing has been found in archaeological records that suggest it's been practiced since the Upper Paleolithic period in Europe.

Today, tattoos are an enduring form of self-expression that allows people to showcase their personalities, as well as commemorate something meaningful through captivating imagery.

THE CONSULTATION

The first step to developing a tattoo starts with a simple conversation.

Typically, clients will choose a tattoo artist based on their unique artistic style and come in with a concept of what they want. Whether this is an image they found online or if they have an idea in mind, a conversation about expectations and desires has to happen before any pens are put to paper.

Each tattoo shop is going to be different, but generally speaking, booking a tattoo consultation is like booking any other appointment. You're generally required to bring proof of identification to prove you are of age, as well as a general idea for a design and the area where you'd like the tattoo to be placed. However, the artist will help you size the tattoo and select a final location when you're there in person. From there, the artist will put a placement photo on your desired location.

There are general topics of discussion that may come up in terms of colour, style, size, or any necessary modifications to the design to achieve your ideal outcome.

Whether you get your tattoo that same day or choose a different date and time, it’s important that you’re happy with the final design and placement of your tattoo. Once you have a concept, the tattoo artist generally takes time to draw up a sketch of the final product based on their stylistic approach along with your requests. Once you agree on a design and location, the tattoo artist can get to work.

THE STENCIL

Tattoo artists create stencils with what some might call a "flow" - flow refers to the way a design FLOWS with a client's body, meaning the design follows the lines and curves of their frame. This ensures that the tattoo is more dynamic (because it moves with the client's body) and gives a much better aesthetic by fitting the client's overall frame.

Once the design is finalized, a stencil is made and matched to fit this flow with the body. It's a transferable guide for the tattoo and acts as the starting place for the tattoo artist. The tattoo artist may shave the area, depending on the client, and will then disinfect the skin before they place the stencil and line it up to the desired symmetry. The client will have a chance to view the design and placement of the stencil before the process begins.

SETTING UP THE WORKSTATION

Any reputable tattoo studio needs to ensure that everything is completely sterile to minimize the risk of infection.

This can include setting up the workstation, sterilizing all of the equipment, prepping the ink, and making sure everything is clean and within reach. Tattoo needles, ink, and machines should be in good condition, sterilized, and high quality to ensure safety and the best possible results.

The artist will then get into the best and most comfortable position while also positioning the client in kind to make sure both parties are prepared to sit for potentially several hours while the artist works. Depending on the size of the studio, a client can generally have one person sit in on their session if they need the support. However, it's important to inquire about this ahead of time.

THE TATTOO SESSION

The actual session is when the magic truly happens. Now it's time to take the stencil and turn it into a permanent piece of body art.

Once the client is comfortable, the artist will begin the actual tattooing process. Tattoo machines use needles to deposit ink down into the second layer of skin (or dermis). The needles move very quickly, puncturing the skin and depositing the ink to create several pigmented deposits that make up the entire design of the tattoo.

Depending on what you're having tattooed, this process can take up to several hours and even several sessions to get the desired look of the design. If you require more than one session, your first session could include the outline of the design while a second session could include colour and/or shading. However, the artist will inform the client on what to expect in terms of time.

We can't talk about the tattooing process without discussing tattoo pain management. As mentioned, tattooing is a needle continuously puncturing the skin, which can definitely be painful. However, several factors can affect a person's pain tolerance; from placement to muscle/fat mass.

Luckily, there are things you can do to help manage pain ranging from breathing techniques, having a person present for moral support, to making sure you're hydrated to avoid light-headedness. An artist can allow a client to listen to music (via headphones) as a distraction or may even offer a numbing cream to help manage the pain.

If necessary, an artist can also let the client take breaks and may even break up a session into multiples if the pain is too much.

Once the tattoo is completed, you’ll have the opportunity to review the final product. The tattoo artist will then give you detailed instructions on how to care for the tattoo after your appointment. Typically, you’ll receive both verbal and written instructions on how to take care of the tattoo to ensure the best quality product after the healing process concludes.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of what to generally expect during the aftercare process:

Initial Tattoo Aftercare (Day 1):

  • Come home with dressing over the tattoo.
  • Wait for the artist's instruction on when to remove the dressing.
  • Expect oozing fluid (blood, plasma, ink) and redness/soreness.
  • Wash hands thoroughly before removing the dressing.
  • Pat skin dry and apply the recommended ointment or lotion.

Days 2–3:

  • The tattoo may appear duller/cloudier as the skin heals.
  • Scabs may form; after day 2, wash the tattoo once or twice a day using Cetaphil.
  • Ink may run into the sink during washing.
  • Allow skin to dry before applying the recommended ointment or lotion.

Days 4–6:

  • "Second skin" is typically removed during this time.
  • Clean the area under water while peeling back the adhesive.
  • Avoid picking at scabs; they may be raised but should not be thick.
  • Wash the tattoo once or twice a day apply ointment or lotion as needed.
  • Any redness should start to fade.

Days 6–14:

  • Scabs will begin to harden and flake off naturally.
  • Avoid picking at scabs to prevent pulling out ink and scarring.
  • Skin may feel itchy; use fragrance-free, alcohol-free moisturizer.
  • If the tattoo remains red and swollen, consult a tattoo artist or healthcare professional for possible infection.

TURNING IDEAS INTO MASTERPIECES

Tattoos typically look different after the healing process is completed and largely depend on how you take care of your skin and how it reacts to the ink. It's important to understand that the appearance of tattoos will change over time; generally, tattoos appear brighter and much more vibrant when they're first completed.

But as your skin heals and the ink begins to settle into your skin, the colours are prone to fading slightly and the lines can appear as if they're slightly blurred. It also depends on the quality of the tools and ink used by the artist, so it's important to do your research beforehand. Luckily, tattoos can be touched up as needed, but generally speaking, a slight loss in colour or slight blurring isn't anything to be too concerned about.

Piercing 101: Essential Tips and Info Before Getting Pierced

Young woman at piercing appointment, piercer putting tool against woman's ear lobe.

Getting a piercing can be a combination of exciting and nerve-wracking. Every experience is going to be different, but there are some things you can do to prepare before your appointment.

+ READY TO GET STARTED? STEP RIGHT UP AND GET IN TOUCH.

HOW TO SPOT A GOOD TATTOO/PIERCING STUDIO

Since the piercing boom that came in the late 1990s, there has been an explosion of popularity in piercings. There's a lot of high-quality piercing studios popping up these days. Many of them even stock a lot of high-end brands in body piercing jewelry. But that alone doesn't mean a studio is worthwhile, so you need to learn how to tell if a business offers professional piercing services.

You may be asking yourself: where did this rise in popularity come from? Truth be told, it's thanks to the Internet and the online presence of the studios. Now, people have greater access to information and images now more than ever, providing inspiration for a prospective “piercee.”

Generally, most trusted institutions offer piercings in tandem with tattoos. These studios should be clean and professional. However, there are a lot more considerations to keep in mind.

  • Cleanliness. As mentioned, when you walk into a studio, you should notice that the walls, ceiling, and floors are all clean and tended to. This is a good indicator that they practice professional and safe procedures.
  • Business License. In some cities, like Toronto, a legitimate shop MUST have a special license to do business legally. Double-check to make sure any place you consider is licensed where necessary.
  • Sterility. You need to make sure your piercing artist is using an autoclave. If the autoclave isn't out in the open, you can always ask to see it. You can also ask to see the studio's spore test results and make sure that they're using the autoclave regularly to sterilize their piercing tools and needles. You have to make sure your piercing artist is using piercing needles in individual, sterile packaging.
  • Portfolio. Always ask to see a piercing artist's portfolio to make sure they have experience with the specific piercing you'd like to get.

THE BIG DAY OF YOUR PIERCING

On the day of your piercing, make sure that you do the following:

  • Eat beforehand. Eating before you get your piercing makes sure you won't experience low blood sugar. Low blood sugar can cause dizziness or potential fainting, especially if you struggle with needles or blood.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitted clothes. Keep in mind where on your body you're getting your piercing, and make sure it won't get irritated by tight-fitted fabric.
  • Take a friend with you. A companion can help drive you home if you feel sick or dizzy after your piercing and can also provide moral support.
  • Bring photo ID with you. Any proper professional will require you to present a piece of government ID and sign a waiver. You should also be sure to bring any additional required documents the shop may need from you.

Note: If you’re under 16, you must have a parent with you, and both of you need to have valid photo ID. That being said, we do reserve the right to refuse piercings on an individual basis.

THE PIERCING PROCEDURE

Your piercing artist should follow several steps during the procedure and provide you with safe and skilled body piercing services:

  • Your piercing artist should mark the site and show it to you before proceeding. This way, you can be sure that the piercing will be exactly where you want it.
  • Your piercing artist should change their gloves every time they touch anything that could be a potential contaminant to their gloves.
  • All the equipment your piercer uses should be contained in sealed, pre-packaged, sterile wrappers with proper indicators on the bottom and the top to let you know the jewelry and needles are clean and sterile.
  • The room should be clean, and your piercer should appear to be in good hygiene. The piercing site should also be cleaned prior to the procedure. If you have any questions or concerns about hygiene, always address them with your piercing artist before they proceed.

POST-PIERCING AFTERCARE

In most professional environments, you'll receive a full breakdown along with a sheet of required aftercare to keep your piercing healthy and avoid infection.

Helpful tips will include keeping your piercing clean with a Recovery Saline Solution or another high-quality sea salt wash required 3-6 times a day.

Your piercing artist should check everything over one last time before you leave to make sure you're feeling OK and make sure you understand the aftercare instructions. Then, you can enjoy a safe and healthy recovery process with your cool new piercing.

WHAT'S NORMAL FOR A NEW PIERCING

Expect the piercing site to be itchy and slightly red on pale skin, or a little darker on those with a deeper complexion. Sometimes, the piercing produces a clear fluid that forms into a crust.

If you've recently gotten an ear or nose piercing, small lumps occasionally form. These lumps, known as granulomas, consist of trapped fluid. They're easily treated by soaking a cotton pad in warm water then holding it against them once a day.

INFECTED PIERCINGS

An infected piercing has the potential to be serious if you don't get it treated quickly. If you think your piercing could be infected, it's best to seek medical aid immediately.

Your piercing might be infected if:

  • The area around it is swollen, painful, hot, or very red/dark (this depends on your complexion).
  • There's blood or pus leaking from the piercing site. The pus can appear white, green, or even yellow.
  • You feel hot, jittery or generally not well. Feeling feverish is also a potential symptom.
  • If you experience any of these symptoms, notify the studio where you received the piercing and see your general practitioner.

HOW TO PREVENT NEW PIERCINGS FROM GETTING INFECTED

Make sure you:

  • Choose a qualified, experienced piercing artist.
  • Clean your piercing as instructed.
  • Use a clean paper towel to dry the piercing after cleaning.
  • Gargle with an alcohol-free mouthwash for mouth piercings.

Make sure you DO NOT:

  • Do not pierce yourself! This is very dangerous and you're far more likely to get an infection. Leave it to the professionals.
  • Do not use cotton wool to clean the piercing. Cotton buds, pads, or Q-Tip’s are fine.
  • Do not pick at the piercing, including the area or crust surrounding the area.
  • Do not twist or turn the jewelry. Generally, try to avoid touching it or putting unneeded contact/pressure on it.
  • Do not use a towel to dry the piercing after cleaning.
  • Do not go swimming after receiving a piercing.

NEED SOME INSPIRATION?

Now that you know what to look for and have some general guidelines, you may want to take some time to consider what type of piercing you'd like to get. Want some suggestions for stylish body piercing options? We have some suggestions for you to get you started:

Earlobe

Odds are you might already have this, and you're looking for the next piercing that isn't in a typical location. In the event you don’t have one, the earlobe is great for beginners. Not to mention the options for earlobe jewelry are seemingly endless.

Nose

While jumping right into a facial piercing for your first time could seem risky, nostril piercings are straightforward and generally not too painful. You can always keep it subtle if you're not sure. While septum piercings tend to be a bit more painful, they offer a wide range of bold jewelry options.

Tragus

The tragus is a simple but different ear-type piercing that can allow you to treat lightly into the piercing world. Keeping at the ears and lowly visible, the piercing still brings plenty to the table in terms of how unique it is.

Daith

A piercing growing in popularity, the daith is an interesting placement due to the claims that it allegedly helps with migraines. Claims aside, daith piercings are quite trendy. The daith is a nice little unsuspected surprise when people see it on you for the first time.

One last thing: it’s important to think about how a piercing will look on you rather than the images you see online. Not everyone looks the same. You can always ask your artist for suggestions or try our Perfect Fit virtual jewelry try-on tool.

We hope this post helps you make that big decision on when, where, and how you get your next piercing! Reach out to book your piercing session with Perfect Image now.

Choosing a tattoo studio is a bit like setting off on an adventure into the unknown. It's exciting, sure, but where do you even begin?

Maybe you're scrolling through options, wondering how to spot the studio that will bring your vision to life without compromise. Or maybe you're simply looking for a sign that says, "This is the place," somewhere you can trust to not only meet, but exceed your expectations.

In this post, we're offering real advice to help you navigate your way to a safe, professional tattoo studio that feels right.

WHY CHOOSING THE RIGHT TATTOO STUDIO MATTERS

Making a thoughtful decision about where to get inked matters — a lot. Choosing the right tattoo studio is about protecting yourself and ensuring your tattoo journey is as positive and fulfilling as it should be.

First off, your skin is your body's first line of defence against the world. When you get a tattoo, you're inviting an artist to make a permanent mark on that protective barrier.

This process comes with its risks. The wrong studio could expose you to serious health issues, from infections to allergic reactions. Trust us, that's a situation no one wants.

Imagine the excitement of getting a new tattoo turning into a nightmare because the equipment wasn't sterilized, or the studio's hygiene standards were an afterthought. Unsanitary practices can cause bacterial infections that not only ruin your tattoo but can seriously impact your health.

The quality of the materials also matters. Low-quality inks and equipment can affect the look and longevity of your tattoo, and can also pose health risks. Allergic reactions, skin irritations, or more severe health implications are real concerns when studios cut corners on their supplies.

And then there’s the quality of the artwork itself. A tattoo is a piece of art that you'll carry with you for life. Choosing a studio without skilled, experienced artists is a one-way ticket to regret. If the artist isn't up to the task, a design that looked perfect in your mind's eye can turn out far from expected.

Your tattoo experience should be memorable for all the right reasons — a celebration of art, self-expression, and personal story. It shouldn't be marred by risks and consequences.

That's why choosing a professional, safe tattoo studio is so important. It's about ensuring your health, safety, and satisfaction are prioritized, from the moment you walk in to the unveiling of your new tattoo and beyond.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A SAFE AND PROFESSIONAL ENVIRONMENT

1. STUDIO SETTING

When you're on the hunt for the perfect place to get inked, the vibe and look of a tattoo studio are your first clues about the kind of experience you're going to have.

First things first: The location matters. In Ontario, it's illegal for artists to work out of anyone's living space. If an artist is willing to overlook this by tattooing inside someone's home, it's worth wondering what other corners they're cutting.

Now, let's talk about the studio space itself. A clean, well-organized shop is a sign that the people running it care about their craft and their clients.

You want to see surfaces that are easy to clean, workstations that are tidy, and an overall environment that feels taken care of. A cluttered, dirty shop is a red flag waving at you to keep looking.

The decor and art displayed in the studio can also speak volumes. It's not just about whether you like the style — it's about what it says about the studio's professionalism and the atmosphere they're creating. Art that makes you uncomfortable or symbols that don't sit well with you are signs that this might not be the place for your tattoo journey.

2. ARTIST EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

A tattoo is forever, and the artist you choose is key in making sure you wear your story with pride, not regret.

The best tattoo artists are those who not only have the technical skill but who know what it means to bring someone's vision to life. They're the ones with portfolios that speak louder than words, showcasing a variety of styles and a mastery of detail.

An artist’s portfolio is your window into what's possible, allowing you to see firsthand the quality and range of their work. Whether it's through their website, social media, or a physical portfolio in the studio, an artist's past work is a testament to their experience and skill.

Experience counts in more ways than one. Asking an artist how long they've been practicing can give you insight into their journey in the tattoo world. While time isn't the only measure of skill, it often correlates.

Training in safety and hygiene practices is also important. Tattoos involve breaking the skin barrier, and without proper precautions, this can lead to infections or cross-contamination. Artists should be up-to-date with training in handling bloodborne pathogens, preventing cross-contamination, and first aid.

3. PROPER HYGIENE

No one expects you to become an expert on this, but understanding what to look for in a safe process can give you peace of mind as you prepare to get your new ink.

Gloves are non-negotiable. They should be worn at all times during the tattooing process, not only to protect you, the client, but also to maintain the highest hygiene standards for the artist.

Each needle should be brand new, straight from a sealed package, and disposed of after a single use. This ensures that there is no risk of bloodborne pathogens being transmitted from one client to another.

The ink used during your session should be portioned for single use. Ink should never be taken directly from large bottles to avoid contamination.

Observing or asking about these practices shouldn't be awkward. Many artists and studios openly showcase their process on social media or are happy to discuss their hygiene practices openly.

If you don't see gloves being used in social media photos, or if the artist seems hesitant to discuss their equipment handling practices, consider it a red flag.

4. INFORMED CONSENT

In Ontario, as in many places, tattoo artists are required by law to gather your contact information and discuss the potential risks associated with getting a tattoo.

A professional studio will have a thorough consent and health history form for you to fill out. This isn't just paperwork, but a key part of ensuring your safety.

The informed consent process is also a sign of a studio's commitment to professionalism and ethical practice. A studio that skips this step or rushes through it might not be giving the process the attention it deserves, which can be a red flag.

5. READ REVIEWS AND SEEK RECOMMENDATIONS

Online reviews are a goldmine of information. Remember, it's not just about the number of stars or reviews a studio has but the stories behind those ratings. Look for reviews that speak to the aspects of the experience that matter most to you, whether it's cleanliness, artistic skill, or the overall atmosphere.

You should also pay attention to how studios respond to reviews, especially negative ones. A professional and thoughtful response can show a studio's commitment to customer satisfaction and its openness to feedback. On the other hand, defensive or dismissive replies can be a red flag, indicating a lack of professionalism or a disregard for client concerns.

But don't stop at online reviews. Talking to friends, family, or even acquaintances who have tattoos can provide you with insights that you might not find online. Personal recommendations can also lead you to discover hidden gems — studios or artists that might not have a huge online presence but are beloved by those in the know.

OTHER TATTOO STUDIO RED FLAGS

We’ve covered a few of the biggest warning signs already, but wanted to leave you with a few more things to keep an eye out for.

  • Unprofessional Staff Behaviour. The way artists and staff interact with clients is a reflection of the studio's overall ethos. If you're met with dismissive, rushed, or rude behaviour, it's a clear indication of a lack of professionalism. This behaviour not only affects the comfort and satisfaction of your experience but can also reflect on the quality of work and care you might receive.

  • Overcrowded or Rushed Environment. Quality takes time. A studio that's trying to juggle too many clients at once may compromise on the cleanliness and attention to detail your tattoo deserves. Each client should feel like they have the artist's full attention for the best result.

  • Unusually Low Pricing. While everyone loves a good deal, way lower prices than what's typical in the market can mean a compromise in quality or safety standards. High-quality materials, skilled artists, and rigorous safety practices come at a cost. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Finally, it's important to trust your gut. If something feels off, it's worth taking a step back to reassess.

THE FIRST 24 HOURS: AFTERCARE FOR BRAND-NEW INK

Here’s what you need to know right after getting a tattoo.

Remember: this is the time when your skin is most sensitive. You can’t cut corners in tattoo aftercare. But if you do it by the book, everything should go smoothly.

1. REMOVING THE BANDAGE

Right after your session, your artist will cover your fresh ink with a bandage. This isn't just a regular bandage — it's your tattoo's first line of defense against everything that could hinder healing.

Here's why that bandage matters:

  • Protection from Bacteria. The world's full of germs, and a fresh tattoo is like an open invitation for them. The bandage keeps those unwanted guests out, reducing the risk of infection.

  • Reducing Friction. You don’t want your tattoo to rub up against your clothes or bed sheets just yet. Friction can irritate your skin and mess with the ink settling in. The bandage helps to act as a buffer zone.

  • Keeping Things Clean. Fresh tattoos can ooze a bit — ink and a little blood. It's normal, but you don't want that on your clothes. The bandage absorbs these fluids, saving you from extra laundry and stains.

How long should this bandage stay on? That depends on what your tattoo artist recommends. It could be a few hours or a few days.

But there’s an important catch: if the bandage leaks or starts peeling off, it's time to remove it. Even if it’s just a tiny gap. Bacteria can get in, and at that point, the bandage can do more harm than good.

2. CLEANING YOUR TATTOO

So, you've just removed your bandage – it's time for the first wash. This is important, and you'll be doing it daily, depending on how much dirt and grime your tattoo gets exposed to.

Here’s how to clean your tattoo properly:

  1. Wash Your Hands First. And we mean really wash them, with soap and warm water. Even if your hands look clean, they could be carrying bacteria, and you don't want that anywhere near your new ink.

  2. Dry Your Hands Carefully. You can either air-dry your hands, use disposable paper towels, or a towel you know for sure is completely clean. Never wipe your hands on a used towel or your clothes, because that just picks up new bacteria.

  3. Gently Apply a Mild, Unscented Cleanser. Be gentle – treat your tattoo like a newborn baby. We recommend using a mild, unscented soap like Cetaphil® Gentle Skin Cleanser. With clean hands, dispense a small dab of Cetaphil® and gently rub it over your tattoo for about 30 seconds.

  4. Rinse with Lukewarm Water. Be like Goldilocks – not too cold, not too hot. You want the water to be warm enough to help clean your tattoo without causing any discomfort. Hot water can increase the risk of irritation, and it can also cause the pores to open too much and leak ink. While cold water won't necessarily hurt your tattoo, it's less effective for cleaning as it doesn't open the pores.

  5. Let Your Tattoo Dry. Air-drying is the gold standard here to avoid any bacteria transfer, but if you’re in a hurry, you can gently dab your tattoo dry using a clean, disposable paper towel.

When you get a tattoo with us, we send you home with a bottle of Cetaphil® as part of our tattoo aftercare package. We want to make sure you're all set for a great start to healing your new tattoo

3. MOISTURIZING YOUR SKIN

After a couple of days, once your tattoo is nice and clean, apply moisturizer. Skin that is healing can become dry and itchy, so a good moisturizer can make the healing process smoother and more comfortable.

The key is to not overdo it. Just a little goes a long way. Too much lotion can clog pores and create a breeding ground for bacteria.

Gently apply a thin layer over your tattoo, rub it in, and then dab off any excess with a clean, disposable paper towel. Do this as needed. And just as with washing your tattoo, you’ll want to do it with clean hands.

We swear by After Inked™ for the healing journey. It's made just right for tattoo care – no parabens or fragrances. Plus, it's not petroleum-based, so it's friendly for all skin types. And we love that it's cruelty-free.

KEEPING YOUR HEALING INK VIBRANT AND HEALTHY

Now that you're past the first crucial steps of tattoo care, it's time to focus on the healing journey.

This is where your dedication really shines through. By continuing the great care you've already started, you're on your way to a beautifully healed tattoo.

Here's a straightforward guide to keep you on track during this healing phase.

1. STICK TO THE CLEANING ROUTINE

Keep up with cleaning your tattoo. This is just as important now as it was on day one. A clean tattoo is a happy tattoo.

2. KEEP MOISTURIZING

Continue applying moisturizer as needed. It's all about keeping your tattoo from drying out while not overdoing it. Remember, a little goes a long way.

3. DO. NOT. PICK.

We know it’s tempting. Just don’t.

As your tattoo heals, it's going to flake and maybe even scab a little. That’s normal. You don’t want to pick because that can pull out the ink and affect how your tattoo looks when it's fully healed.

Let nature take its course, and those flakes and scabs will fall off when they're ready. It’ll be worth it for your vibrant, healthy ink in the end.

4. STAY ON DRY LAND

For now, stay away from swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, and saunas. Baths are also a no-go while your tattoo is healing. Submersion can make your tattoo fade quicker, heal poorly, and up the chances of an infection.

Stick to short showers to keep your tattoo as dry as possible.

5. PROTECT IT FROM THE SUN

The sun is not your healing tattoo’s friend. UV rays can cause fading and damage. For the first 3-4 weeks, keep your tattoo out of the sun to avoid blistering and scarring.

And remember, even after your tattoo has healed, protect it with a high SPF sunblock. Sun protection is a lifelong commitment for your tattoo.

WHILE YOUR TATTOO IS HEALING: WHAT’S NORMAL, WHAT’S NOT

Knowing what to expect and what to watch out for is important when it comes to taking care of your new tattoo.

Most of the time, what you're experiencing is just part of the healing process. But if you notice anything out of the ordinary, it's important to act quickly.

WHAT'S NORMAL:

  • Redness and Swelling. Right after getting tattooed, it's normal for the area to be red and a bit swollen. It’s a natural reaction to getting inked.

  • Tenderness and Mild Pain. The area might feel tender, similar to a sunburn. This discomfort should decrease over a few days.

  • Scabbing and Flaking. Your tattoo will likely scab and flake. It's a good sign; it means your skin is healing. Remember, don't pick at the scabs!

  • Itchiness. Feeling itchy? That's common too. It usually means the skin is repairing itself. Resist the urge to scratch and keep up with moisturizing.

  • Oozing. A bit of oozing is normal in the first few days. This could be plasma, blood, or ink. It's just your body doing its thing.

  • Duller colours. Noticed the colours aren’t as vibrant? Don't worry. A layer of healing skin can make the tattoo look duller, but the colours should pop again once healed.

  • New Skin. Within one to two weeks, you should see a fresh layer of skin, depending on the tattoo's location.

WHAT'S NOT NORMAL:

  • Major Swelling or Redness. If the swelling or redness increases or spreads, it could be a sign of infection.

  • Ongoing or Worsening Pain. Pain that gets worse or doesn't go away, especially with redness and swelling, can be a red flag.

  • Prolonged Oozing or Bleeding. If your tattoo keeps oozing or bleeding after a couple of days, it might indicate an infection.

  • Bad Smell or Discolouration. Any bad smell or strange discolouration around the tattoo should be checked out.

  • Extreme Itching or Rash. Mild itching is normal, but extreme itching or a rash could be an allergic reaction to the ink or aftercare products.

If something feels off and it’s not too serious, don’t hesitate to reach out to your tattooist for advice. But if you're in pain, worried, or the symptoms are severe, go straight to a doctor. Quick action can prevent serious issues.

Remember, it's better to be safe and get it checked than to wait and risk your health!

Tattoo artist with client

Welcome back to Perfect Image's blog series on advocating for safety and professionalism in the tattoo and piercing industry.

In Part 1, we explored the current landscape of the industry, the significance of online reviews and customer experiences, and the critical issue of untrained personnel. We also discussed Perfect Image's unwavering commitment to professionalism, safety, and quality, emphasizing our dedication to providing a professional experience for our clients.

In this second installment, we will delve deeper into the benefits of a regulated industry. By implementing better regulation and standardization, we believe that the tattoo and piercing industry can not only thrive but also ensure the safety and satisfaction of every client.

THE BENEFITS OF A REGULATED INDUSTRY

1. ENSURING CUSTOMER SAFETY AND SATISFACTION

In the tattoo and piercing industry, the safety and satisfaction of our clients are paramount. This is where industry regulation comes into play as a critical component of our commitment to professionalism and quality.

Let's delve into how a regulated industry ensures the safety and satisfaction of our valued clients:

  • Rigorous Sterilization Protocols: Regulation mandates strict sterilization practices, ensuring that all equipment, jewelry, and workspaces meet the highest hygiene standards. At Perfect Image, we follow these protocols meticulously to eliminate the risk of infections or complications associated with unsanitary conditions.
  • Standardized Procedures: Industry regulations establish standardized procedures for every aspect of the piercing process, from preparation to aftercare. This consistency guarantees that clients receive a uniform and safe experience, regardless of where they choose to get pierced.
  • Continuous Training and Certification: Regulations often require artists to undergo continuous training and maintain certifications. This ensures that our team at Perfect Image remains up-to-date with the latest safety measures and industry best practices.
  • Ethical Practices: Regulations promote ethical practices, including informed consent and transparent communication with clients. This commitment to ethics fosters a sense of security and trust among clients, knowing that they are fully informed about the piercing process and its potential risks.

In essence, a regulated industry places client safety and satisfaction at the forefront, offering peace of mind to those seeking body modifications. By adhering to these standards, we at Perfect Image aim to provide a experience that not only meets but exceeds our clients' expectations.

2. IMPROVING THE INDUSTRY'S REPUTATION

A well-regulated industry contributes significantly to improving its overall reputation. When clients know that stringent standards are in place and enforced, they are more likely to view the industry with trust and confidence.

This positive perception has a ripple effect on the industry's image as a whole:

  • Minimizing Negative Experiences: Regulations help in weeding out unqualified practitioners who might provide subpar services or engage in unethical practices. This minimizes the occurrence of negative experiences that tarnish the industry's reputation.

  • Elevating Professionalism: Industry regulations elevate the level of professionalism expected from studios. Clients are more likely to have a positive view of an industry that values professionalism, safety, and quality.

  • Attracting Responsible Artists: Stringent regulations attract responsible and ethical piercing artists who are committed to upholding industry standards. This influx of skilled professionals enhances the industry's reputation and fosters a community of excellence.

By advocating for better regulation and standardization, Perfect Image not only ensures the safety of our clients but also contributes to the overall positive perception of the tattoo and piercing industry.

3. FOSTERING TRUST AMONG CLIENTS

Trust is the foundation of any successful business-client relationship, and in the tattoo and piercing industry, it holds particular importance.

A regulated industry fosters trust among clients in several ways:

  • Transparency: Regulations promote transparency. Clients can expect clear and honest communication about risks and aftercare, leading to a sense of trust in their chosen studio.

  • Accountability: Regulations hold studios and artists accountable for their actions. Clients know that if they encounter any issues or concerns, there are established channels for addressing them, ensuring their interests are protected.

  • Consistency: Standardized procedures and regulations ensure that clients receive a consistent level of service. This consistency builds trust as clients know what to expect.

At Perfect Image, we understand that trust is earned through our unwavering commitment to professionalism and adherence to industry regulations. Our aim is to create an environment where every client feels secure, valued, and confident.

THE TATTOO AND PIERCING INDUSTRY TODAY

A BOOMING INDUSTRY WITH GROWING POPULARITY

The tattoo and piercing industry is currently experiencing an unprecedented surge in popularity.

What was once considered a niche subculture has now become a mainstream phenomenon. People from diverse backgrounds are embracing body piercings and tattoos as forms of self-expression, art, and personal identity. This growth has led to a proliferation of studios and artists eager to cater to this demand.

As a piercing artist at Perfect Image, I've witnessed this industry-wide expansion firsthand. Our studio, like many others, has seen an influx of clients seeking everything from delicate ear piercings to intricate body modifications. While this surge in interest is undoubtedly exciting, it also drives home the need for strict quality control and professional standards.

ONLINE REVIEWS AND CUSTOMER EXPERIENCES

In today's digital age, customer reviews and experiences play a pivotal role in shaping the reputation of businesses. With just a few clicks, potential clients can access a plethora of online reviews and testimonials that provide insights into the practices, professionalism, and overall satisfaction of past customers.

Online platforms and social media have become double-edged swords for our industry. They allow customers to share their positive experiences and showcase their stunning body modifications, which can attract new clients. However, they also shine a spotlight on untrained personnel and studios that fail to meet the necessary standards. These online reviews serve as a crucial source of information for those seeking body piercings and tattoos, emphasizing the importance of choosing a reputable and professional studio like Perfect Image.

TESTIMONIALS FROM SATISFIED PERFECT IMAGE CUSTOMERS

THE PROBLEM OF UNTRAINED PERSONNEL

While the growth of the tattoo and piercing industry is undeniably exciting, it has also given rise to a concerning issue – the presence of untrained personnel. As the industry expands, individuals with little to no formal training or qualifications are entering the market, offering tattoo and piercing services to unsuspecting clients.

This situation poses significant risks to the health and well-being of clients. Untrained tattoo artists and piercers may lack the knowledge required to perform safe and sterile procedures, increasing the likelihood of infections, complications, and unsatisfactory results. It's a distressing reality that anyone, regardless of their qualifications, can potentially offer piercing and tattoo services.

In the following sections, we will delve deeper into the impact of untrained personnel on customers and explore how Perfect Image is addressing this issue to ensure that every client receives a safe, professional, and satisfying body piercing experience. We firmly believe that the industry's growth should go hand in hand with a commitment to safety and quality.

THE IMPACT ON CUSTOMERS

  • Unsafe Practices: Without the proper knowledge of sterilization procedures and piercing techniques, inexperienced practitioners can inadvertently put clients at risk of infections and other health complications. It's an alarming reality that substandard practices can lead to long-lasting physical consequences for those seeking body modifications.

  • Increased Risk of Complications: Untrained piercers often lack the expertise needed to anticipate and prevent complications. Even seemingly minor errors during the piercing process can result in painful infections, allergic reactions, or more severe issues such as nerve damage. Clients shouldn't have to gamble with their health when seeking professional body modifications.

  • Negative Experiences: Beyond physical risks, encountering untrained personnel can lead to deeply negative experiences for clients. From unsanitary studio conditions to a lack of communication and bedside manner, these encounters can be emotionally distressing and disappointing. Negative experiences can leave clients feeling disillusioned with the industry, making them hesitant to seek further piercings or tattoos.

THE NEED FOR BETTER REGULATION AND STANDARDIZATION

Given the concerns outlined above, it becomes abundantly clear that the tattoo and piercing industry needs better regulation and standardization. Clients deserve peace of mind when they decide to undergo body modifications, knowing that their safety and well-being are prioritized.

Better regulation can:

  • Establish clear guidelines for practitioners, ensuring they receive proper training and maintain high standards of hygiene.

  • Implement stringent sterilization and safety protocols to minimize the risk of infections and complications.

  • Mandate adherence to ethical practices, including informed consent, proper aftercare instructions, and transparent communication with clients.

  • Enable clients to make informed decisions by providing access to information about a studio's certifications, qualifications, and compliance with industry standards.

  • In the following sections, we'll explore how Perfect Image is leading the way in advocating for professionalism, safety, and quality within the tattoo and piercing industry. We believe that a regulated and standardized industry is the key to ensuring the well-being of our valued clients.
